Yesterday it was Tisha B'Av, a day of national mourning and for many Jews the saddest day on the Jewish calendar.

All around the world, the Jewish People are in deep sorrow over the destruction of the Holy Temple in which the Shekhinah (Divine Presence) dwelled here in Israel among His people.

"I will put my dwelling place among you, and I will not abhor you." (Leviticus 26:11)

The destruction of the First and Second Temples in 586 BCE by the Babylonians and in 70 CE by the Romans, and the resulting brutal exiles, are still deeply felt by the Jewish People today.

For that reason, many Jews did fast yesterday, and in synagogues around the world yesterday morning, the Torah portion was Deuteronomy 4:25–40, which prophesies Israel's future iniquity and exile.

Deu 4:25-40 HRB  When you father sons and son's sons, and you have been long in the land, and have dealt corruptly, and have made a graven image, a likeness of anything, and have done evil in the sight of YAHWEH your Elohim, to provoke Him to anger;  (26)  I call the heavens and the earth to witness against you today that you shall soon utterly perish from off the land to which you go over the Jordan to possess it; you shall not prolong your days on it, but shall utterly be destroyed.  (27)  And YAHWEH shall scatter you among the peoples, and you shall be left few in number among the nations to which YAHWEH shall lead you away.  (28)  And there you shall serve other gods, the work of man's hands, wood and stone, which cannot see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.  (29)  And if you shall seek YAHWEH your Elohim from there, then you shall find Him, if you seek Him with your whole heart, and with all your soul,  (30)  in your distress, when all these things have found you, in the latter days, then you shall return to YAHWEH your Elohim, and shall listen to His voice.  (31)  For YAHWEH your El is a merciful Elohim. He will not forsake you, nor destroy you, nor forget the covenant of your fathers which He swore to them.  (32)  For ask now of the days past which were before you, since the day that Elohim created man on the earth, and from the one end of the heavens to the other end of the heavens, whether there has been a thing as great as this, or has anything like it been heard.  (33)  Has a people heard the voice of Elohim speaking from the midst of the fire, as you have heard, and lived?  (34)  Or has Elohim gone forth to take to Himself a nation from the midst of a nation, by trials, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand, and by a stretched out arm, and by great terrors, according to all that YAHWEH your Elohim did for you in Egypt before your eyes?  (35)  To you it was revealed, so that you might know that YAHWEH He is The Elohim, and nothing exists without Him.  (36)  He made you hear His voice out of the heavens, that He might discipline you; and He made you to see His great fire on earth; and you heard His Word from the midst of the fire.  (37)  And because He loved your fathers, and chose their seed after them, and brought you out with His presence, with His great power, out of Egypt,  (38)  in order to drive out nations greater and mightier than you from before you, to bring you in, to give their land for an inheritance, as it is this day;  (39)  know today, and lay it to your heart, that YAHWEH, He is The Elohim in the heavens above and on the earth beneath. Nothing Else.  (40)  And you shall keep His statutes and His commandments which I am commanding you today, so that it may be well with you, and with your sons after you, and so that you may prolong your days on the earth, which YAHWEH our Elohim is giving to you all the days.

The Haftarah (prophetic portion) yesterday morning was Jeremiah 8:13–9:23, which accurately describes the desolation of Zion.

Bestepe People's Mosque for Turkey's people

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday July the 3rd inaugurated a mosque on the grounds of his gigantic palace complex and opened it to the public in an apparent effort to stave off more criticism over his spending.

Erdogan, who has been accused of squandering state resources by building the grandiose 1,150-room presidential palace, dedicated the mosque to the people at the opening ceremony, naming it the "Bestepe People's Mosque."
The new mosque, with four 60 meter-high (200 feet) minarets, can accommodate up to 3,000 worshippers and is one of Ankara's largest. Erdogan described its design as a fusion of architectures from the Ottoman and Seljuk eras.

The president has dismissed criticism over his expenditure and has recently moved away from calling the presidential premise a "palace," using the term "presidential complex" instead. He insists that the complex belongs to the people and that he is its "temporary occupant." Officials have said that a congress hall and one of Turkey's biggest libraries, which are under construction at the site, will also be open to the public.

The ruling party, founded by Erdogan, lost its parliamentary majority in last month's elections, in a blow to Erdogan's ambitions to turn the largely ceremonial presidency into an executive post.
Opposition parties had made the palace a theme of their election campaigns, forcing him on the defensive and to even deny that it had gold-plated toilet seats. In a television interview, he also justified the construction by saying his old office when he was prime minister was infested with cockroaches.

Last year, Erdogan shrugged off criticism that the complex was illegally built on protected land saying: "Let them knock it down if they have the power."

Prediker zijn in een dorp hoeft niet saai of vruchteloos te zijn

Dat het prediken of het dominee zijn in een klein dorp niet saai hoeft te zijn verteld Ds. M. van Dam die onlangs afscheid nam van zijn kerkelijke gemeente in het dorp Hagestein.

De predikant zegt zijn allereerste gemeente vaarwel. Met CIP.nl blikt de relatief jonge dominee terug op zijn beginperiode. "Dominee-zijn in een dorp is niet saai."

"De kunst is om als dominee zoveel mogelijk jezelf te blijven en onder de mensen te komen. Je moet niet boven de mensen staan, maar onderdeel van de gemeenschap zijn. Zeker in een kleine dorpsgemeenschap. Daar moet je niet te ingewikkeld over doen. Gewoon door het dorp lopen en wat praatjes maken. Voor je het weet heb je een goed gesprek en weer iemand leren kennen. Van die rol zou een dorpsdominee bewust moeten zijn. Als je dat op een open en vriendelijke manier doet, wordt dat gewaardeerd."

Miljoenen voor zeldzaam boek met evangeliën

Bij het veilinghuis Christie’s in Londen is vorige week het zeer zeldzame Evangelieboek van koningin Theutberga voor 3,2 miljoen euro geveild.

Het boek is nog in zeer goede conditie, ondanks dat het meer dan 1000 jaar oud is.
Het karolingische boekwerk stamt waarschijnlijk uit de negende eeuw en bevat de evangeliën van Mattheüs, Markus, Lukas en Johannes. Het is geschreven door Franse benedictijner monniken en ooit als geschenk aan koningin Theutberga gegeven.

Mennonieten uit gehele wereld in VS bijeen

Op de dag van de Nationale Feestdag voor België werd in in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, het zesjaarlijkse Wereldcongres van de Mennonite World Conference (MWC) geopend.

In 1925 begonnen de congressen voor de internationale doopsgezindegemeenschap der Mennonieten. De MWC heeft zich ontwikkeld tot een internationale gemeenschap die 102 nationale kerken omvat met 1,4 miljoen leden, dat is twee derde van het geheel van de wereldwijde doopsgezinde familie.

Ook in Nederland is deze gemeenschap nog actief en weet er zich ruim 120 leden zich naar de Nieuwe Wereld begeven, onder wie veertig jongeren. Wij moeten niet denken dat alle Mennonieten tot de Oude Orde behoren die bekend staat om haar strenge geloofs- en kledingregels en waar vervoer nog steeds per paard en koets gaat.

Thuishaven van de Stauffer Mennonieten, welke een zeer conservatieve groep van de Old Order Mennonieten zijn, mag Pennsylvania nu meerdere gelovigen van de drie kwart van de leden die vallen onder de Mennonite World Conference ontvangen. Het verwachte aantal deelnemers is niet te onderschatten. Rond de zesduizend mensen zullen bij de ontmoeting in Harrisburg in de Verenigde Staten aanwezig zijn. Het is een ideale gelegenheid voor  mennonieten, Brethren in Christ en Mennonite Brethren verenigd te voelen. Oorspronkelijk volgelingen van de prediker en theoloog Menno Simons (ongeveer 1496-1561), later algemene benaming voor Doopsgezinden kunnen deze Mennonieten of Mennisten als oudste nog bestaande doperse kerk kijken op de hedendaagse wereld waar mensen meer en meer afglijden op het pad weg van God.

Wij moeten beseffen dat het steeds belangrijker wordt voor Christenen om zich één te voelen en met elkaar verbindingen te leggen. Hiertoe hoopt dit congres een bijdrage te leveren voor contacten te leggen tussen zoveel mogelijk mennonitische geloofsgemeenschappen in de wereld en aanverwante kerken, en dat zijn er meer dan honderd.

"Door elkaar te ontmoeten en samen te vieren willen we onze geloofsidentiteit verdiepen. Dat is nodig. Aanvankelijk waren we vooral op de Noord-Amerika en Europa gericht, maar nu bevindt de grootste gemeenschap mennonieten zich in Afrika, terwijl we ook hard groeien in Zuid-Amerika, India en Indonesië. Dat heeft geleid tot een veel grotere diversiteit aan kleuren, smaken en vormen in de wereldwijde doopsgezinde gemeenschappen dan vroeger.”

In de gemeenschap waar de bijbel wordt beschouwd als de enige macht en er geen zogenaamd hoger geplaatste geestelijken zijn wordt er geweigerd om een eed te ondergaan om tot een land te behoren of voor iets anders. Wij behoren tot Gods natie waar wij respect horen te getuigen voor Zijn schepping en aldus hier ook zorg voor moeten dragen. Daarbij voeren zij zeer consequent door dat natuurlijke producten voorop moeten liggen in het gebruik.


Zoals de Belgische Broeders in Christus staan de Nederlandse doopsgezinden open voor een liberaal geloof met als kernwaarden een gelovige (volwassen)doop, geen dogmatiek, en verwachten zij van hun leden de leer van Christus Jezus te volgen en aldus een vredestichter te willen zijn en een geloofspraxis uit te voeren volgens de leer van Christus. Veel doopsgezinden doen vrijwilligerswerk. Verder kennen ze geen voorgeschreven belijdenis, maar een zelfgeschreven, persoonlijke belijdenis, want individualiteit vinden zij belangrijk.

Evenals de kleine gemeenschap in België valt het op dat in Nederland men dezelfde reden kan vinden waarom die gemeenschap daar ook zo klein is. De Broeders in Christus en de Mennonieten zijn gemeenschappen van daden waarbij de leden zelf elk eigen persoonlijke keuzes moeten maken. In Nederland zijn de Mennonieten ook niet zozeer missionair en moet men zich vrijwillig tot de gemeenschap willen aansluiten.

De Nederlandse bezoekers aan het congres kunnen de Amerikanen een idee geven hoe het hier aan toe gaat en vertellen waarom er hier geen missionering en verdere uitbreiding van de geloofsgemeenschap lijkt waar te maken.

"In een tijd van globalisering en mobilisering is dat steeds minder mogelijk. Daarom zijn zij geïnteresseerd in de manier waarop wij als doopsgezinden ons in de Nederlandse maatschappij weten te assimileren, terwijl ze ons vroeger juist te liberaal vonden. Kijk om je heen, maar blijf wel op elkaar betrokken, is wat wij hen meegeven.”

Als uitdaging voor het Wereldcongres is er die globalisering en hoe mensen minder interesse in god lijken te hebben maar waar de geloofsverbinding toch zeer belangrijk is. Op het congres wil mij zo bekijken wat de Mennonieten zo blijft verbinden. alsook wil men natuurlijk ideeën uitwisselen om te zien hoe men te werk kan gaan om de kinderen tot het geloof te houden en hoe er kan gedeeld worden van gaven van zowel de oude gemeenschappen in het Westen als de nieuwe daarbuiten die een steeds grotere rol gaan spelen.

There may be lots of people who are not interested in God or who do not belief in God. Though all created in the image of God, all have also some feeling for the Divine Creator in them. Also when we look around us we can see many wonders of nature, get to see special signs in our life and in the lives of others.

The God of gods teaches the people of all nations. He gives them signs and has given His Word to all human beings, so that they can hear His voice. The Elohim, Mar-Yah, wants His people to  keep His commandments. God showed the World what He can do and gave the people many things by which they could see the Work of the Hands of the Most High Who also taught them statutes and ordinances.

For our wisdom and our understanding God has given His Word and produced signs and wonders. All His Master-works were made in the sight of the peoples, who shall hear all these statutes. (Deuteronomy 4:6)

Deu 4:9-10 AESV Torah  Only take heed to yourself, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things which your eyes saw, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life; but make them known to your children and your children's children;  (10)  the day that you stood before Mar-Yah your God in Horeb, when Mar-Yah said to me, "Assemble me the people, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children."

We should hear the voice of words and see the signs and miracles in this world. we do have to seek Mar-Yah our God, and when we open our eyes and heart to Him we shall find him, when we search after him with all our heart and with all our soul. God will not fail those who look for Him with a sincere heart, neither destroy them, nor forget the covenant of their fathers which He swore to them. (Deuteronomy 4: 29,31)
